NOAA weather satellite orbit the earth at approximately 500 mile orbit known as low earth orbit or LEO.  These satellite transmit weather satellite pictures of the area it is passing over 24 hours a day.  The easiest signals to receive and decode are in the 137 mhz band.    Europe and Russia have weather satellites orbiting but they are no longer functioning due to age or equipment failure.  Those are the Metop and Meteor satellites. There was a new Metop satellite launched but it does not have VHF APT capabilities.
